I have many memories of going to school, I started schooling at Brighton Road State School, after being there for 6 months I caught Diphtheria, was in hospital for a couple of months. When it was time for me to go back to school my parents didn’t want to sent me back to Brighton Road. They blamed the school for my sickness. They came down to Elwood Central School and checked to school over for cleanliness.

I  have to laugh to myself as now we know that catching Diphtheria has nothing to do with cleanliness.   Well they we very happy with Elwood Central, so in 1949, I started at Elwood Central school in what we called the Bub’s school.
I have lots of memories of course from swapping cards ( which was stopped due to Polio epidemic), to skippy at play times.  I asked my Dad to get me a skipping rope, which made me popular at playtimes.

Some of the teachers I remember are; Mrs Brown in primary school, Mr Paul think 4th grade.  I have a memory of a folding doors separating the two fourth grades. Some times  it was folded back and we were taught by one teacher. Also there was a Miss Ryan and my very favourite teacher was Mr Dobre. He was an amazing teacher. I happened to see him many years later, I was walking along Brighton Road with my baby girl and he recognized me.  He was a true teacher, who took interest in all his pupils.  We also had Mr Colin Mac Donald cricket player, Lorraine Crapp,  Olympic swimmer and Brian Muir for P.T , US GIRLS ALL  USED TO SWOON OVER HIM lol..
